Madeline Margaret Roth (nee Bender) passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of Sunday July 31, 2016 at the age of ninety eight.

Madeline was the daughter of Veronica and Allan Bender of Wellesley Ontario. She was predeceased by her husband Alvin Roth, daughter Elva Mae, brother Vernon and sister Jean Bender. She is lovingly remembered by her brother Delmar Bender (Mary), sister Grace Brunk (Oliver), her children Paul (Carolyn), Gloria (Dave), Keith (Micheline), Brian (Heather), Joyce (John), and eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

She will also be missed by her many friends and relatives in London and the Wellesley area.

Madeline attended Milbank and Wellesley Public Schools and was such a keen student that she graduated from grade eight two years ahead of schedule. She was extremely disappointed that her commitments on the farm kept her from continuing her education. Nevertheless, her love of education remained evident all her life by her own reading and her curiosity as she challenged and encouraged her children in their education and endeavours.

After marrying in 1939, she and Alvin farmed in Wellesley for nine years. When a small group of like-minded couples decided to move out of the established Mennonite community to start farming in a new area, Madeline was instrumental in finding the available land in the Nairn area near London. Within two years of relocating, the members of that new community decided to start a mission in London and Madeline and Alvin were the couple willing to go. As a result Madeline, who was the mother of three small children, also became the housekeeper and cook for the Goodwill Rescue Mission (later Mission Services of London) during which time she cooked two meals every day for dozens of men for five years.

Eventually the family moved to a house separate from the Mission. There she was able to look after her growing family and indulge in her love of creativity in many forms. In particular she loved gardening. Her garden was well known to friends and neighbours and she regularly sold what she grew in plant sales to raise money for charitable projects. In addition she contributed her time to the Women’s Auxiliary and the Clothing Centre, both services of the expanding Mission Services of London.

Madeline had a deep and unfaltering Christian faith. She was also a founding member of the Valleyview Mennonite Church which started in a house on King Street as an outreach originally focused on children. As the church grew she remained an active participant where she enjoyed Christian service, Bible study, music and fellowship. In recent years as her abilities have decreased, music remained a joy for her and continued as a means of communication.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Valleyview Mennonite Church 1170 Melsandra Ave. London on Friday August 5, 2016 from 1:30pm -3:00pm with a funeral service immediately to follow at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Mission Services of London or Valleyview Mennonite Church.
